Waiting to see what KAW will be, if I have time I hope to do both. I have a basic idea for this one already, but I'll probably need all of the 2 months to make it work.

 

Like I said before... Just have fun! Read each review... Take what you can learn from them, but don't take anything personal.

Of course your tales have been told before. Most have. So what? A new take on an old story has been done before by more well-known writers than any of us.

Hell... I'm here and drunk, so I'll answer. I would think that the 1,000 word criteria that the story side demands would be the minimum, But if you could tell a full story in under that... Go for it!

 

The minimum is what it takes to tell your story. Please note that CAW judging can go against simple vignettes.
The max is what a reader would finish reading. Literally. Some of the entries have been almost novelettes. If you submit a long one and readers are caught in the story until they finish, 50,000 words later, then you have a good start to a win.

Keep in mind that if you discuss an idea out here in public, then you cannot write about it. That violates anonymity, so be careful what you say. Now, if you are tossing stuff out for purposes of subterfuge, THAT is entirely okay, not just okay, but it can be lots of fun. There was a chap here, DaddyCums, and him and I used to have lots of fun bantering back and forth that way. Just be careful. We did have a writer a couple of years ago talk about his story and then he was disappointed when he was told that he couldn't write about it.

One does expose themselves a bit (understatement, and no pun intended) by posting work in this writing challenge/competition. Most people end up with a mix, some good praise, etc. Word of advice...when you are done, review it a few times for grammar. Spell check is one thing, but it will not find all issues issues. The repeated word I just posted? No way spell check finds that. Nor will it help with their there or they're. Your entry doesn't have to be grammatically correct, but the less issues with grammar, the more some people (including picky ass me, lol!) will appreciate it. There is not. There is a practical count at both ends. If you write something too short, it becomes a vignette rather than a story, and you can get hammered for it. Just depends upon one's definition of short. 500 words? Pretty short. I wrote a story that was 1,600 words, it was a letter from Satan, and no one said it was too short. Sometimes people write very long stories, and while I enjoy reading books, not so much online in a short story challenge. Longest I wrote for a CAW was about 17,000 words, and that pretty much pushed the limit of my interest. I know there was a 50,000+ word entry written by another writer that I enjoyed, and a 100,000 word entry that was simply too long to sustain my interest. Some of this is just my opinion, so, if you have something to tell and it doesn't fall into the average parameters, so be it.

 

So if I posed here that I wanted to know if you would all enjoy a story about a Greek netball player who was having a lesbian affair with a dog track owner, who was in love with a lettuce picker, whose boss sold the fresh produce to a grocery store owner, who was married to a lady that had a brother who liked to go and watch netball in the hope of seeing up their skirts, I couldn't use it?

I'm at 1296 right now. Usually I don't write very fast. Now that I'm taking a break, I'll probably go back to the beginning and re-write what I have because I'll hate something about it.

Seven weeks isn't too much time for me.
