Fan Index Week 3: The top 10 college football fan bases in America

College Football Fan Index presented by Degree is a cumulative data-based ranking of America's most engaged fan bases for the 2014 season, as determined by social media activity and online polling. Read on for this week's results, and come back Thursdays for each new Fan Index.

The Fan Index Week 3 Top 10

Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

1. Oregon (182,756 social mentions, 1,191 voting points)

Ducks fans are flying high these days. Oregon beat up on Michigan State on Saturday night and is ranked No. 4 in the Amway Coaches Poll. All that euphoria is causing those in the student section to do strange things like this:

2. USC (340,419 social mentions, 387 voting points) -- USC athletic director Pat Haden said he was "mid-hot dog" during Saturday's win over Stanford when a compliance official texted to say that peeved Trojans coach Steve Sarkisian requested the AD's presence. And there Haden went.

3. Michigan (128,968 social mentions, 826 voting points) -- Listen as this guy reacts to the Wolverines' 31-0 loss to Notre Dame like a mature adult.

4. Notre Dame (140,322 social mentions, 632 voting points) -- Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder seems ... excited about his unit's play.

5. Tennessee (121,101 social mentions, 705 voting points) -- It's unclear whether the 2-0 Vols are actually going to be wearing these, but I truly hope not:

6. LSU (134,274 social mentions, 565 voting points) -- Freshman running back Leonard Fournette needs to work on his Heisman pose, but it was a solid first effort.

7. Alabama (280,137 social mentions, 223 voting points) -- If you want some insight into Alabama fandom, check out this Q & A with writer Rick Bragg, who profiled Nick Saban for Sports Illustrated in 2007.

8. Texas A&M (228,723 social mentions, 288 voting points) -- The 12th Man means business:

9. Penn State (116,858 social mentions, 424 voting points) -- Think Nittany Lions fans are excited about the bowl ban being lifted?

10. Nebraska (178,201 social mentions, 197 voting points) -- Apparently, some folks aren't too happy about the music selection at Memorial Stadium. Yikes.

Interesting takeaways: Oregon fans are out in full force after the Ducks blitzed Michigan State. For the second straight week, Tennessee is the highest ranked team in the SEC. The Vols have, gulp, Oklahoma this week. LeBron James had fun at the Ohio State game last Saturday, but the Buckeyes dropped out of the Top 10.

Overperformers/Underperformers

Fan support (or the lack thereof) doesn't always depend on winning and losing. That's why we'd like to take a moment to praise the fan bases who are supporting their struggling teams, and scold the ones who aren't supporting their good teams enough.

Below are the the week's five most overperforming and five most underperforming fan bases. To determine this, we've compared each team's Fan Index ranking to its position in Paul Myerberg's 1-128 NCAA Re-rank.

Top 5 Fan Index Overperformers

1. Iowa State, +69 (No. 39 in Fan Index, No. 108 in NCAA 1-128 Re-Rank)

2. Purdue, +67 (No. 50 in Fan Index, No. 117 in Re-rank)

3. Kansas, +59 (No. 53 in Fan Index, No. 112 in Re-rank)

4. Arkansas, +51 (No. 19 in Fan Index, No. 70 in Re-rank)

5. Kentucky, +49 (No. 36 in Fan Index, No. 85 in Re-rank)

Bottom 5 Fan Index Underperformers

1. Duke, -41 (No. 64 in Fan Index, No. 23 in Re-rank)

2. Stanford, -34 (No. 47 in Fan Index, No. 14 in Re-rank)

3. BYU, -30 (No. 51 in Fan Index, No. 21 in Re-rank)

5. TCU, -26 (No. 61 in Fan Index, No. 35 in Re-rank)

4. Arizona, -25 (No. 52 in Fan Index, No. 27 in Re-rank)

Week 3 poll results: Best tailgates

Courtesy of LSU

1. LSU (20% of the vote)

An LSU tailgate is like nothing else. Sure, Baton Rouge lacks the polish of say, Oxford, Mississippi, but where else could you find a food item like this? (Note: That's not a real elephant.)

LSU is a tailgating mecca. Get there if you can.

Week 3 poll runners-up: Penn State (8%), Ole Miss (7%), USC (6%), Tennessee (5%), Iowa (4%), Clemson (4%)

Interesting takeaways: Penn State surprisingly beat out highly touted Ole Miss. Another impressive showing for East Carolina, which pulled in 3% of the vote. I guess Oregon isn't known for its tailgating scene. It didn't receive many votes.
